Graduated licensing
Getting your first driver’s licence is exciting! (Okay, maybe not the test-taking part.) We’re here to help you succeed with tips, quizzes, apps, and more.
By going through graduated licensing (GLP), you’ll learn the skills and attitudes that will help you become a safe and confident driver. You’ll ease into driving in a less risky way—first with a qualified supervisor, then on your own.
To get through GLP, you’ll have to pass three tests—one multiple choice test, then two road tests. If you drive safely, it’ll take about three years from start to end. That means lots of time to study, practice, and take driver training to develop your knowledge and skills.
1: Get your learner’s licence – your L
You can get your L on or after your 16th birthday.
Here’s how to get your L:
- Get a parent or legal guardian to sign consent if you’re under 19
- Take and pass the knowledge test at an ICBC driver licensing office
- Pass a vision screening test

2: Get your novice licence – your N
After at least a year of practice with a qualified supervisor, you can take your first road test.
Here’s how to get your N:
- Book, take and pass the Class 7 road test

Penalties are strict in the GLP
If you violate the zero blood alcohol content or zero blood drug concentration restriction, you may be subject to fines and other penalties. If you have your L or N, you’re not allowed to use any personal electronic devices, even with a hands-free system.
3: Get your full licence
The next step is finally here-getting your full licence! No more graduated licensing restrictions, tests or L and N signs on the back of your car.
You can apply for your full licence after having your N for at least 24 months of safe driving with no prohibitions (or possibly 18 months, if you took an ICBC-approved driver training course in your L stage and were a safe driver during that period).
Here’s how to get your full licence:
- Book, take and pass the Class 5 road test
