Before you come to your road test, make sure you have the right ID, documentation, and that your vehicle is test-ready.
What to bring to your road test
When you come for your test, be sure to bring:
- Accepted ID
- Fee for your road test
- Valid insurance and registration documents
- A safe vehicle
Note:
- If you plan to use a vehicle from a car sharing co-op or company and are not the named member, you must provide a letter from the company authorizing you to use the vehicle for an ICBC road test; the letter must be written on original letterhead, dated, and signed by a representative of the company. A new letter must be produced for each road test attempt.
- Audio, video and other recording devices cannot be used during your road test. GPS and navigation systems must be turned off. Using these devices could lead to the cancellation of your road test appointment.
- Vehicles must have Canadian plates
Prepare questions for your examiner
We want you to feel as prepared, confident and comfortable as possible. Come prepared with questions, and if you can, print and complete the ready for your road test card. It’ll help your examiner to understand your needs and answer your questions before you start.
Vehicle safety checklist
You need to bring a safe, reliable vehicle for your road test.
Your vehicle’s interior must be clean and scent-free, and free of any items that may affect health and safety.
If it isn’t safe (e.g. seatbelts not working, outstanding serious vehicle safety recall) or doesn’t meet legal requirements, we may have to cancel your test.

10 most common reasons a vehicle might not be accepted for a road test:
 | 1. Cracked or illegally tinted windshield or windows |
 | 2. Dash warning lights (e.g. air bag) that affect the safe operation of the vehicle |
 | 3. Seatbelts not working or frayed |
 | 4. Brake lights, signal lights or headlights not working or with badly cracked or missing lenses |
 | 5. Vehicle not properly licensed or insured |
 | 6. Unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications |
 | 7. Horn not working |
 | 8. Unsafe tires |
 | 9. Doors or windows not operating (e.g. doors don’t open from inside) |
 | 10. Gas tank or electric charge too low |
Rescheduling or cancelling your road test
We understand things come up. If you’re going to cancel or rebook, please give 48 hours’ notice to avoid a $25 cancellation fee.
Retaking your road test
Review the feedback on your previous road test form. We recently improved the form to give Learners specific feedback to help them understand what they need to become a safe and competent driver. Make sure you practice as much as possible to ensure you’re prepared to retake the test.
